Life Goes On

It has been about 4 month since we went into hard lock-down but the virus are still spreading and economic impacts from the lock-down aren’t improving.

There is common belief that the virus is here to stay for at least next 2 years. So what should we do then? Stop everything we do and wait till it goes way?

I think we just have to continue on with our lives. We just can’t live in fear and scare to do anything. We need to continue to live our lives. Of course there are some adjustments we need to make, like wearing a mask when we go out to shopping, washing hands frequently, be extra careful on crowed places, etc.

When it comes to economy, we need to expect that things will get worse in next 6-12 month, especially after the election and prepare those times by start saving little more than what you did before.

As a church, we continue to do what we are called to do by equipping ourselves with the word, learning and practicing God’s character and be a witness of risen Jesus by reaching out to people around us.

Our future might looks dim but throughout the history, there were always times of trouble and hardships, especially for Christians, but God always came though.

Let’s not worry too much about what we don’t have control of but focus and do the things we can do. Life goes on…

Biblical Meditation

One of the most beneficial spiritual practices that I have learned in my life in God is biblical meditation and it has become part of my life for past 12 years ever since I learned.

There isn’t one way to get to know God so I won’t say biblical meditation is the best way to build relationship with God but I will say, it is one of the most practical and beneficial tool for anyone to know and learn about God through His words.

It helped me to clear my thoughts by focusing on the word, gives me wisdoms and guidances on things that I needed help with, learned to focus on the word and not on people’s opinions and circumstances around, learned God’s character and to trust him deeper in times of distress.

One of the most challenging thing in the beginning was to be consistent with meditation. There were days I did, there were days I didn’t… But one things I kept on going was not to give up and actually being a pastor helped. ^^;

I hope Living Life QT booklet helps and few things I would like to remind you on biblical meditation.

be Delight - any worries or be in mindful of any, toss that to God as you be with Him the Word - have your booklet with you or the Bible. Meditate the word, not your thoughts Day and Night - set a time to meditate will remind you each day

True Maturity - Pastor Chai

I once saw maturity defined as “the ability to live with ambiguity.” I agree. When we’re young, we see everything as black and white. A person is either good or bad. An opinion is either right or wrong. But as we get older, we begin to realize there is a lot of gray. Even good people have some hidden vices in their lives, and even bad people have some commendable virtues. All good advice has some drawbacks and all bad advice has some merit. As we get older, we become more flexible in our judgments of people and situations, and I consider that maturity.

The Apostle Paul warned us about making hasty judgments against people. He cites two reasons: first, we don’t know their true motives (1 Cor 4:5) and second, God alone can judge (Rom 14:10). Following his command to not judge prematurely requires maturity. And maturity enables us to follow his instructions. These two feed each other.

Perfectionism is another sign of immaturity, because perfectionists only think in terms of right and wrong and can’t accept anything wrong, including themselves. As a result, they’re constantly frustrated by the people around them and depressed by their own imperfections.

Perfectionists can be dangerous. A good example is Adolf Hitler. He wanted to establish a perfect society on earth. He considered the Aryan race a superior one and fit for this task. In contrast, he believed the Jewish race an inferior one whose existence was detrimental to his perfect society. This belief led him to send millions of Jews to concentration camps and the gas chamber. Obviously, there was only one Hitler, and few perfectionists become criminals. But in their pursuit of perfection, perfectionists hurt people around them. The more power they have, the more hurt they can cause. Eventually, they destroy themselves.

Some perfectionists may argue that God demands us to be perfect. This is true. Scripture says that we should be perfect just as God is perfect (Matt 5:48). But the perfection our Lord was talking about is not about our character. He meant to be perfect in our impartiality. As God loves both good and bad people and sends the same rain to both of their fields, we should also be impartial and love both good and bad people.

Pursuing perfection itself is not wrong. In fact we must try to imitate the perfection of our Lord. When we do our Lord’s work, we must do our best to do it perfectly. We must try to live blameless and perfect lives so that we can say with Apostle Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” But we must also remember that while this is our ideal, it’s unattainable on earth. We cannot live perfect lives and cannot become perfect persons no matter how hard we try. We must accept imperfections in others and ourselves. That’s maturity.

Dreams 02

Second dream that God places in us is for his community. A community formed by believers whom pursues his first dream.

That was given by Jesus to his disciples on Matthew 28:19-20

[19] Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

As an individual, to love God and others as ourselves are all we need to pursue as our dream but as a community, we need to pursue second dream, which is to save the lost and make disciples of all nations.

Our community, city, state and nation is still recovering from Pandemic and economy shutdown and this is when we need to recover and focus on the goal that God has given us, to our community, to our church.

Let’s wake up our passion by reaching out to VIPs and pray for their soul and life.

There are several things I would like to start that will help us to focus on two dreams that God has given to us.

Meditation QT booklet. Practice biblical meditation to build healthy relationship with God and others by having his words in us.

VIP List I’m going to ask all of you to pray and get names of people that you believe God has leading you to pray and serve them to know God.

Life Series in Fall semester Starting a Life Series to equip us as a disciples of Jesus

Well, those are couple of things I’m considering to start our engine again and I would like to ask you to pray for me and our community to continue to run the race with faith and hope in God.

Dreams 01

I believe it’s important for a person to have a dream (or you can call it a goal). It provides clear vision and directions in life. What I need to do to obtain the goal, what decision I need to make and follow, what sacrifice I’m willing to make, etc…

But for me, I didn’t really had any dreams or goals when I was young that I wanted to pursue. I didn’t really think about what I can do in this world.

Not until I became a Christian I had a dream I wanted to pursue. And I thank God everyday for giving me a dream to pursue and life to live in His grace.

But how about you? Do you have a dream that you want to pursue?

I believe God places 2 dreams for us to pursue. Dreams for each person and Dreams for each community.

Personal dream is to love God with all we are and love others as ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-40). Whatever personal decision we make, should always make our relationship healthier with God and others.

Whether I work as a teacher, an operator, or a construction worker, it’s my personal goal to make healthier relationship with God and others.

If my relationship with God and others are deteriorating, knowing that is my personal dream and goal on everything I do, I must make a change.. Since I’m pursuing God given dream, I know when I need to continue on or make necessary changes in things I do.

God has given us different talents and skills to pursue our own passion but gave us the dream that we all get to share as His children.

Often times, we get lost in life by only pursuing my own passion and neglecting the bigger dream that our God has placed in us.

continue next week.

How would you like to remember year 2020?

Almost half of Year 2020 is behind us but I feel like this year has been really, really long… Can’t believe we still have 7 more month to go… ^^;

Now other states are opening up and many businesses are opening up as well.

There are still many protests around the cities of US and other parts of the world but, I’ll say, this isn’t how we are going to remember year 2020.

Even though we’re in the midst of Pandemic and protests, I believe things will get better because that’s what we’ve done whenever there were challenges upon us. We don’t stay disappointed or give up when things are tough, no, we always find ways to turns things around.

As we adjust our lives to new-norm, there will be new opportunities and challenges we can take on to make things better for our lives and others. I hope people would to take this time to equip and train them selves to take new opportunities that will come on their way.

But as a church, what can we do to make things better for us and others in this challenging time?

We have to go back to the basics.

The purpose of church’s existence is to save the lost and make disciples and that means, we need to focus on this again as a church.

Due to Pandemic, things have stalled for us to reach out to non-believers and do ministry so to start things up, let’s make a list of VIPs that each of us can reach out to pray and serve.

When we focus on Kingdom’s business, God takes care our business. (Matthew 6:33).

People may remember year 2020 as a year to forget but to us, it should be a year that we got to make things better for us and others.

Just Mercy

During the Pandemic, we had many movie nights and we even watched all Harry Potter series together! ^^;

One of the movie we’ve watched together was ‘Just Mercy’ It’s based on a book written by Bryan Stevenson on a true story of Walter "Johnny D." McMillian. An African-American man who was convicted of the 1986 murder of Ronda Morrison, a white woman and put on a death row.

This movie interested me after I listened to an interview of Bryan Stevenson, author of the book.

Without giving up too much information about the movie, I will say that the amount of injustice that Mr. McMillian had experienced were something probably most of us will not going to experience but at the same time, many people are still experiencing it even till this day.

After the movie, I couldn’t believe it was a true story and I felt like I am living in a different world. But I had to admit, that can happen to me or anyone I know, at any time.

One of the reason the author picked Mr. McMillian’s story is that it happened in Monroeville, Alabama, where the book ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ was written. Talk of irony…

This movie made me think about social justice (or injustice) and how one person can change and influence other person’s life, in a good or worse way.

I know things will not get better overnight but I know we just need to keep trying…

“If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” – Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

TEN COMMANDMENT FOR CHURCH LIFE (Part II) - Pastor Lee, SooKwan

Pastor Kyung Jun Lee of Seoul Down church, who was the speaker of revival at SBC a few years ago, told us about the 'Ten commandments for church life'. Recently, I found the memo I made at that time and shared the first 5 items last week and in this issue, I continue the remaining part. The first 5 items are about relationship with God so it is not too much different from the original Ten Commandments; however the rem items have greater application to church life. As I told you last week, the captions are from the memo at that time and the explanation is what I added.

  1. You shall not murder - If there is any conflict in a relationship, do not delay in reconciliation : Since Jesus said that hating someone is the same as murdering him, this application is true. In church, if an uncomfortable relationship is not tended and left neglected, hatred grows in its place. Therefore, remember the words of Jesus to reconcile with your brothers and sisters before offering gifts in front of the altar (Matthew 5:23-24), and let not Sunday pass over conflict.

  2. You shall not commit adultery - Do not allow a chance for temptation : We all need to be on our guard against temptations. Wearing a provocative outfit to church is one example. Please do not ask nor accept for counseling with the opposite sex even though they are house church leaders. Also, married people should not work alone with other married ones even for ministry work nor share any spiritual matter. Especially, a brother’s visit to a sister who is in the US without her husband normally to fix something or render some help could be a chance for a temptation. Therefore, both parties should act prudently and not allow the enemy to lure us in our weaknesses.

  3. You shall not steal - Care for church items : Generally, articles in church get out of order quickly and sometimes go missing. Using church items without care since it does not belong to you is like stealing from God. As we learn to care for church items as for our own, the church will become a beautiful place.

  4. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor - Avoid criticism or slander : The world is quick to judge. At least inside of the church, we should wait on people who have done wrong and guide them to receive the direction of the Holy Spirit. When there are many words from us, it robs the chance for God to speak. As a result, rash criticism and defamation can cause the victim to leave church and prevent him from listening to God. It also prevents him from repentance before God and robs his chance to be restored.

  5. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house - Do not compare with each other : For church life to be happy, church should not operate by the worldly standard but by faith and devotion to God. I am very grateful that this is achieved in our church and that the congregation is happy in church life. Comparison is a way to self-inflicted misery. Please do not bring worldly standards into church. It is alright to celebrate a success in the world, but it is not something to be envied or admired. It is pleasing to God for us to remember that.
